Syria frees hundreds of detained protesters

BEIRUT (Itar-Tass) - Syrian authorities freed over 360
protesters who were arrested for participation in upheavals across the
country in the past months, the interior ministry said on Thursday.
It said 361 protesters who confessed to committed offenses during the
unrest were released right after they pledged not to participate in any
actions that are detrimental to the state and citizens.
The government also called to inform police on cases of vandalism,
acts of terror and about places of weapons keeping. People who voluntarily
confess of such offenses before May 15 will not be subject to criminal
persecution.
Syrian authorities mounted security in the country on the eve of a
regular day of wrath on Friday. However opposition said it would not
cancel protests and called on supporters to "challenge the ruling regime."
