BERNAMA CHAIRMAN ATTRIBUTES IDEA OF 24-HOUR TV NEWS CHANNEL TO THE LATE DR NOORDIN SOPIEE

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- An idea of the late Dr Noordin Sopiee expressed 10 years ago served as the inspiration for Bernama chairman Mohd Annuar Zaini to launch the Malaysian national news agency's 24-hour TV news channel.

Mohd Annuar said his appointment as Bernama chairman in February 2004
provided a platform for the idea to eventually take shape.

Although Dr Noordin, who was Institute of Strategic and International
Studies (ISIS) chairman and chief executive officer, died in December 2005, his
idea lived on and served as an inspiration, Mohd Annuar said at the launch of
Bernama Web TV by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the Prime
Minister's Office, here.

He said that in 1998, when Malaysia faced a financial crisis and a
confidence-building crisis, Dr Noordin had come up with the idea for the country
to introduce a 24-hour TV channel to provide an accurate perception and positive
image of the country at the international level to restore confidence in
investors.

Mohd Annuar said he knocked on the doors of the government as well as large
private companies but they were not receptive to the idea of a 24-hour TV news
channel and it became a reality only after Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah of Silver
Ridge Holdings Bhd decided to invest in the venture.

He said Mohd Suhaimi, who is currently managing director of Bernama TV, was
a Bumiputera entrepreneur who not only helped to realise the dream but would
have his name recorded in the history of media development in the country.

"The launch of Bernama TV and Bernama Web TV is a continuing process to
realise Dr Noordin's dream and for us to keep the torch of his vision ignited.

"Bernama TV is a dream -- a reality. The dream has become reality because
there are people who believe that dreams can become reality," he said.

With the launch of Bernama Web TV, Bernama will be disseminating its news
via wire, the bernama.com portal, Bernama Radio 24, Bernama TV and Bernama Web
TV.

Mohd Annuar said the new service would provide for unrestricted access to
Bernama TV over Astro's Channel 502 from anywhere in the world via the
Internet.

The new service fulfilled a new reality, a new concept, a new agenda and a
new plan in meeting the needs of the new generation in a world conversant with
new technology and equipment and demanding new approaches in media operations,
he said.

A world pivoted on knowledge required answers accurately -- and fast, he
said, adding that a delay in disseminating accurate information would give ample
room for the spreading of false news.

Mohd Annuar said the false news would reach the target earlier and have the
advantage of being the first news while the actual news, having arrived late,
would be rated secondary and serve to rectify the damage already done.

"News on government successes requires a prudent approach in terms of
marketing and communication methods so that the people are able to appreciate
the efforts taken by the government and the world can understand what actually
happens in the country," he said.

He said the financial allocation to develop infrastructure and the budget
for media software was an investment the government should be prepared to
provide prudently because this gave returns in the form of the people's
confidence and understanding in the government.

On the communication highway competition, he said the competition lay not
merely in the speed in which breaking news was disseminated but also in its
credibility and ethical delivery, thus the highest level of journalistic
integrity and accountability was expected of Bernama.

Mohd Annuar also wanted Bernama staff to be prudent in managing success at
a time when Bernama was on the threshold of success and not be proud or
arrogant.

They should instead continue to learn, be prepared to accept criticism,
come to terms with their own shortcomings, and be prepared to connect with
clients by respecting their views so that the quality of service continued to
improve, he said.
