Westpac says EFTPOS and ATMs working again

SYDNEY (AAP) - Westpac has apologised to customers around Australia who were unable to use online banking, ATMs or EFTPOS after a data centre shut down.
"It was a problem with an air-conditioning fault which then had a knock-on impact, as the temperature rose in the data centre the systems started to shut down," a Westpac spokesman said.
Westpac does not yet know how many people were impacted before the fault was fixed and facilities brought back online.
But customers can now conduct their banking transactions as per normal using ATMs, EFTPOS, telephone banking and in branches.
Last month, millions of National Australia Bank (NAB) customers were unable to access money after the fault crashed its payment system, delaying the processing of payrolls and other transactions.
It was the second time in five months NAB's payment system caused problems.
The Westpac spokesman on Thursday said the bank didn't have a problem with its systems, just an air-conditioning fault that was a one-off.
"Over the last few years, we have had a very good track record on this, it is something that we very much regret and would hope wouldn't be repeated," he said.
