Thai representatives will ask EU to help develop ASEAN economy

BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwannakhiri and Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot will lead a Thai delegation to attend the 5th meeting between the European Commission and the ASEAN Economic Community Council (AEC Council) that will take place during the 18th ASEAN Summit on May 4-8 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Alongkorn said that the AEC Council would follow up the progress of implementing the AEC Blueprint toward the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community that is scheduled to happen in just the next four years.

In the meeting, member countries will share experiences in implementing the AEC Blueprint including problems and obstacles, and discuss solutions that can help them meet the schedule.

The meeting will also acknowledge the progress of ASEAN agriculture and forestry ministers and ASEAN finance ministers. Rising prices of foods and commodities will further be discussed.

The meeting between the European Commission and the AEC Council will be a highlight of the upcoming sessions. Participants will share views on the development of regional and global economies, especially on economic cooperation between ASEAN and the European Union.

Both sides will consider the ASEAN-EU Trade and Investment Work Programme that will facilitate cooperation between ASEAN and the European Union. They will meet representatives of private sectors to acknowledge proposals from the 1st ASEAN-EU Business Summit that will take place in Jakarta. (TNA)
