Thai DPM: New general election expected after June 26

BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban insisted on Thursday that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will submit a royal decree on a House dissolution to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej for a royal approval within the next couple of days, but the date of Thailand's new general election is now likely to be deferred from the tentatively set June 26.
Suthep, who is also secretary general of the ruling Democrat Party, said that the period should coincide with the promulgation of three organic laws on the country's reformed electoral systems--after a review by Bangkok's Constitutional Court.
Normally once a royal decree on a House dissolution is approved by His Majesty the King in a royal command, the Thai premier will announce the dissolution of Thailand's House of Representatives to pave the way for a new national poll over the next couple of months.
Deputy Premier Suthep acknowledged, however, that the date of the country's new general election is now likely to be deferred from June 26 to provide more time for the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) to prepare necessary arrangements for the new national poll. (TNA)
