IEA praises Thailand for prototype energy plan

BANGKOK, May 4 (TNA) - The International Energy Agency (IEA) has praised Thailand for what it called a "prototype energy management master plan" of efficient preparation for any world energy crisis.
Thai Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul confirmed on Wednesday when opening a meeting on national energy that the Thai energy management master plan, tailored by his ministry, has been recognized by the Paris-based IEA to be a model energy management initiative in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)--which will efficiently cushion Thailand from serious impacts of any global energy crisis.
According to the Thai energy minister, however, the government should raise the country's strategic energy reserve benchmark to 90 days, from 60 days currently, and should seek energy supply from other sources, rather than relying mostly on the Middle East, namely those imported from West Africa instead, to reduce external risks.
The Thai energy minister acknowledged that the increase in national energy reserve level, as advised by the IEA, will cost the Thai government three billion baht to build larger oil depots to cater for the additional energy stocks. (TNA)
