FM: Thailand ready for border case at World Court

BANGKOK, May 4 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to cope with Cambodia's petition to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to consider its Preah Vihear temple dispute with Thailand.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya told reporters after returning from Geneva, Switzerland, that he had met Australian, Canadian and French lawyers and informed them what Thailand had done. He received information requests from the lawyers and discussed various strategies to cope with Cambodia’s accusations in its request for the world court to interpret its 1962 ruling on the Preah Vihear temple.

Representatives of Thailand and Cambodia will deliver their verbal statements to the court on May 30 and 31.

The foreign minister said Veerachai Palasai, the Thai ambassador in the Hague, the Netherlands, would head the Thai team of 15 members including three legal advisers in the court. The team mostly consists of officials from the Foreign Ministry including those from the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs. They will discuss Thailand’s statement, which will be delivered to the court, and submitted in document. The process will take about 4-5 months, with the court expected to announce its ruling after the New Year.

Asked if Thailand and Cambodia will discuss the Preah Vihear issue during the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Indonesia on May 7 and 8, Kasit said there has not yet been a plan. (TNA)
