Tsunami in Japan has affected over 60,000 Thai workers

BANGKOK, May 4 (TNA) - The tsunami in Japan has affected over 60,000 Thai workers and 80,000 more are likely to feel negative impacts later.

Amporn Nitisiri, director-general of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, said that as of April 28 the natural disaster in Japan has affected enterprises in Thailand and caused 60 local plants to reduce production due to insufficient raw materials. Some suspend overtime while others stop all operations.

The situation has affected 60,704 employees in five Thai provinces comprising 11,441 employees at 16 plants in Ayutthaya province, 17,605 employees at seven plants in Samut Prakan, 7,287 employees at four plants in Chon Buri, 4,500 employees at three plants in Chachoengsao and 2,670 employees at three plants in Pathum Thani.

The director-general of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare said the situation might also affect 80,130 more employees at 302 other companies in the automotive parts, automotive assembly, electronic parts and export-oriented wig industries.

In the meantime, 26 companies are benefiting from more orders. They employ 23,016 workers and have increased their work hours. The companies are in the industries of processed foods, livestock, ceramic containers, aluminum products, vegetable and fruit export and construction materials.

Yongyuth Mentaphao, president of the Federation of Automotive Labour Unions, said that in the past two months the production of the Thai automotive industry has dropped by half. Many companies try to retain their employees and refrain from a salary cut. Some companies must reduce their production, limit their workdays only at Tuesdays and Wednesdays and cut their employees’ salaries by 25%. (TNA)
