More tourists visit Thailand

BANGKOK, May 4 (TNA) - The Tourism Department has found that more foreign tourists are confident of safety in Thailand and are visiting the country.

Supol Sriphan, director-general of the Tourism Department under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, reported the result of a survey on 1,200 foreign tourists about their views on tourism in Thailand. The survey was conducted on April 9-30, 2011, and was aimed at gathering information to improve tourism promotion in Thailand. The survey has found that Thai tourism was very healthy and led to the expected arrivals of at least 17 million visitors to Thailand and a tourism-related income of over 600 billion baht this year.

84.7% of respondents stated they are not concerned about situations in Thailand and are confident of their stay in the country; 77.5% said they made great value from the money they spent in the country; 71.4% said they would return; 36.3% said marine attractions brought them to Thailand; and 59.3% visited the country due to friends’ advice.

The survey has found that the top factor to impress tourists was Thai food, followed by the local culture, spas and traditional massage. What tourists dislike are unfairly high charges by taxi drivers and pollution.

In the first quarter of this year, 5.3 million foreign tourists visited Thailand. The figure rose by over 674,000 tourists or 14.47%. This partly resulted from better a political situation in the country compared with situations in the same period last year.

The highest increase in arrivals was from Europe while the number of visitors from the Middle East dropped due to political situations in many countries in the region.

The top ten countries of origin of foreign visitors to Thailand are Malaysia, China, Japan, Russia, Korea, the United Kingdom, Laos, Germany, the United States and Sweden.

In the second quarter of this year, about 3.9 million foreign tourists should visit Thailand if situations remain the same in the country, excluding impacts of global politics and economy. The figure will show a 37% arrival increase. (TNA)
