PLN ASKED TO TAKE PART IN CARING OF MUSI RIVER BASIN
Bengkulu, Sept 4 (ANTARA) - State power company PT PLN has been asked to play an active role in the care of the Musi River basin, which is the location of the 3 x 70 megawatts (MW) coal-fired power plant PLTA Musi.
"PLN has a deep interest in the condition of Musi River because PLTA Musi is located there, so that it is only fair that the state electricity company also contributes to the care of the river basin," Economic Affairs Assistant for the Development and Welfare of people of Bengkulu Fauzan Rahim said here Wednesday.
He added that adequate and stable volume of water would be needed to move the three turbines of PLTA Musi.
And the water input depends on the condition of the forests in the upper reaches of the river. If the forests had been seriously deforested, the water input will also drop.
In this context, he said, the Bengkulu provincial administration and PT PLN will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU)on September 6, 2008, and signing the MoU for PLN will be its director overseeing the southern parts of Sumatra (Sumbagsel).
In the sidelines of the signing ceremony, the two sides will discuss the building of a power grid serving the sounthern parts of Bengkulu covering Seluma, South Bengkulu, and Kaur regencies.
The power grid would hopefully enable the people of Bangkulu to enjoy the electricity produced by PLTA Musi, he said.
Assistant Administrative and General Affairs Manager of PT PLN overseeing Bengkulu Syaiful Anwar said on a different occasion that the power grid to the sounthern parts of Bengkulu will be built soon by drawing the network from Kota Pagar Alam in South Sumatra.
"We will make the connection with the network from Pagar Alam because the distance is shorter," whe said when asked to conform in Bengkulu. To facilitate services, he said a transmission line will be built in South Bengkulu regency," he said.
He also said that land is being cleared for the network from Pagar Alam to South Bengkulu. The grid will be integrated to the Sumatra power grid, which gets its power supply from several power plants including PTLA Musi in Kepahiang regency, Bengkulu.
The power grid in Bengkulu must cover three areas, namely Rejang Lebong regency, Kepahiang, and Bengkulu City, and the construction of the transmission line will be started early in 2009, and scheduled for completion by the end of next year.
Many people in Bengkulu province are not yet enjoying electricity, and with various efforts, all of them are expected to have electricity by 2010.
Right now 171,000 villages still have no electricity, and in 2008 some 36,000 villages may have electricity, so that by the end of the year only 135 villages would still have no electricity.
