Iraqi Journalists Syndicate celebrates International Press Freedom Day, more than 2000 journalists present

Baghdad (NINA) - Iraqi Journalists Syndicate held, in Alwiya Club today, the celebration marking the International Press Freedom Day, more than two thousand journalists participated in the event.

Deputy Prime Minister, Salih Al Mutlag, stressed in a speech during the celebration, which was attended by representative of the President and head of the Presidency Office, Naseer Al Ani, Minister of Human Rights Mohammed Shiaa Al Sudani and a number of officials and managers of satellite channels and news agencies, newspapers, and media centers, "the celebration of this day is to mark those who have sacrificed their lives so that honest word expressing the conscience of the people remains a distinctive title for the Iraqi press and journalism professionalism."

Journalists Syndicate Chairman, Muayad Al Lami renewed in his speech "the Iraqi journalists’ adherence to the concepts of democracy in the Iraqi society and to mobilize all energies in this direction, as democracy is one of the pillars of cultural construction of communities and the Iraqi journalist will remain struggling for access to information and transfer it honestly and impartially."

He stressed "the Iraqi journalists, who submitted over the past eight years, more than 300 martyr journalists and faced blind bullets of terrorists, armed groups, and American occupation, will keep its word on sacrificing and struggling side by side with the citizen to build Iraq on correct and clear concepts and it will not be a servant of the ruler if he deviated from the right path."

He called on the politicians in various countries around the world who keep journalists in their detentions to release them because they are soldiers in all the fields to serve their people.

Baghdad Governor, Salah Abdul-Razzaq, expressed Iraqis’ appreciation of all the sacrifices of journalists and their commitment to issues of the citizens and their sufferings as well as their adherence to neutrality and the sincere word.

Ismail Zayer, member of the International Federation of Journalists said "the IFJ is greatly interested in the Iraqi journalists and sees that they are on the front row for the freedom of the press."

He stressed, in a statement on behalf of IFJ "the Federation’s solidarity with the Iraqi press, the Federation watches and hopes the success for the Iraqi journalists’ projects in appropriate professional atmosphere and suitable ground, as befits Iraqi people.”
