Thai cabinet approves extra Bt4 billion for flood-hit Thai south

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - The Thai cabinet has approved extra financial assistance worth over 4 billion baht for flood-affected operators and farmers in Thailand’s southern region.
Deputy government spokesman Watchara Kannikar said the move would cover assistance for victims of natural disasters in 2010 and 2011, aimed for small farmers and small-and-medium-sized enterprises affected by floods, storms and mudslides.
Watchara said financial assistance worth 2 billion baht has also been approved for aqua farmers affected by 2011 floods and landslides. The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) will oversee the assistance and the government will pay the interest worth 100 million baht for the farmers.
Furthermore, he said, an aid package worth 2 billion baht has also been directed for businessmen affected by floods, storms and landslides this year. The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank will oversee this assistance and the government will pay 2 percent interest for two years worth totally 80 million baht.
Watchara said the cabinet has also approved new loans for farmers who are clients of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives in the lower South and have been affected by last year floods. The assistance will go to aqua farmers and small fishermen, each of whom will receive a loan of up to 500,000 baht, and also to large-scaled fishermen, each of whom will receive a loan of up to 1 million baht. The lending will be subject to the minimum retail rate and the government will pay its 3 percent interest for up to three years.
The deputy government spokesman added the cabinet has also endorsed additional lending of 887.56 million baht by the Islamic Bank of Thailand to self-employed people who suffered from floods and storms last year as sought by them earlier. (TNA)
