Thai DPM expects good outcome from Abhisit and Hun Sen talk

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban who supervises security affairs has expected a solution to the Thai-Cambodian border rows from Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s meeting at the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia on May 7.

The latest round of border clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in northern Thailand’s Surin province from April 22 until May 2. Monday’s clash had reportedly killed a Thai soldier.

Suthep said he believed the meeting of both national leaders should result in a good solution because both sides wanted a peace talk.

The deputy prime minister noted when the crossfire ended, people would be able to return home and situations would improve.

On Tuesday, evacuees in nearby Buri Ram province have reportedly spent their time at home after their return, but dared not to travel outside for work.

All nine evacuation centers in Buri Ram were closed and most evacuees returned home since Monday. However, people of Ban Saitho Tai village in Ban Kruad district said they were still in shock and doubted their safety.

Rubber farmers, in particular, were waiting for authorities to help remove grenades and artillery shells that may be left in their plantations.

Local people also urged the government to build at least 5-6 standard bunkers in their villages, as there were currently none.

Meanwhile, border patrol police, territorial defense officials and defense volunteers, were still guarding border villages around the clock. (TNA)
