Thailand remains in US priority watch list

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - The United States has kept Thailand on its priority watch list (PWL) due to piracy situations in the Southeast Asian country, where efforts to tackle the problem are expected to continue.
Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot expressed his disappointment with the US decision to keep Thailand on its PWL for another year from April 30. He said Thailand has been tackling piracy in the past two years. It has conducted as many as 4,851 cases of piracy, seized over 4.2 million pirated products and campaigned against piracy among the youth.
Alongkorn said the US claimed that Thailand did not have a law against the illegal recordings of films in movie theaters, against owners of places where piracy was supported and against the piracy of copyrighted works on the internet and digital media. The Council of State is scrutinizing the bill and the next government must proceed with it, Alongkorn said.
The US is the third most important trade partner of Thailand. Last year, their trade value amounted to over 980 billion baht. Thailand posted a trade surplus worth over 296 billion baht and enjoyed privileges worth over 111.9 billion baht from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
The deputy commerce minister said although Thailand remained on the PWL, its GSP privileges should be intact. (TNA)
