Former Olympic Champion Katarina Witt Backs New Technology in Sports
Doha, May 02 (QNA) - New technology and gadgets that enhance equitable supervision of sports as well as its development should be welcomed by the global community, former Olympic champion Katarina Witt said here.
"The ideals of fair play and perfect supervision of international sports events are vital for its success," Witt, two-time Olympic champion who set new benchmarks in figure skating representing East German in the early 1980s, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) in an exclusive interview.
"This is a dynamic process. Sport keeps evolving over the years. We cannot put a cap on it and say 'this is enough, we cannot go beyond this'. Technology keeps getting better. People did not talk about staging carbon neutral sports in the past, now we do. Consider how the new stadiums are built. They are energy efficient and use renewable sources of energy," she said.
The 1984 and 1988 Olympic title winner who equaled Norwegian Sonja Henie's the record of winning six consecutive European Championships in 1988 is participating in the 9th World Conference on Sport and Environment (WSCE) as chair of the Munich 2018 Winter Games Bid Committee panel here in Doha.
