Thailand to invest Bt40 million in ‘One Province One Agro-Industrial Product scheme’

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - Deputy Minister of Industry Putthipong Punnagun presided on Tuesday over the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the ‘One Province One Agro-Industrial Product’ (OPOAI) Scheme between the Ministry of Industry and regional agro-industrial enterprises.
Putthipong said under the OPOAI scheme, his Ministry aims to promote good agro-industrial production in each province. The scheme aims to promote the capacity of regional agro-industrial enterprises and raise their competitiveness. It focuses on the use of local resources to increase quality of life, create more jobs, and raise household income.
The Deputy Minister also said the implementation of the OPOAI during 2007 and 2008 had been a success, generating an estimated economic value of 1.3 billion baht. Provincial Industrial Offices mainly drove the scheme in all 75 provinces with 400 enterprises participating altogether. It helped participating enterprises reduce their cost, raise their revenue, and increase their product prices.
Putthipong said this year that the Ministry of Industry has allocated a budget worth of 40 million baht in total to undertake the OPOAI scheme in all 75 provinces. It is expected that 150 entrepreneurs of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) with a authorized shared capital of less than 200 million bath will participate in the scheme and that the scheme will help further generate over 150 million baht of investment.
