Radiation background normal in Russia's Far East
VLADIVOSTOK, May 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's Far Eastern regions report
no increases in radiation background levels on Tuesday, weeks after the
accident at Japan's Fukushima-1 nuclear plant.
The Far Eastern emergencies centre reported that no deviation from the
natural radiation background levels have been registered in either of the
regions and territories of the Far East. The radiation background in the
area was under 16 microroentgen per hour, which is below the permissible
level of 30 microroentgen.
The situation is constantly monitored by 630 stationary and mobile
control stations. One of such stations is located onboard the Pavel
Gordiyenko research ship, which sailed off Vladivostok on April 22. The
ship's mission is to check radiation contamination of water and air in the
Sea of Japan and in the Pacific near Russian Kuril Islands and Kamchatka
peninsula. The mission will last till May 16, 2011. Another ship, the
Nadezhda sailing vessel on Tuesday joint operations on measuring the
radiation background.
All data is sent to the crisis management centre of the Far Eastern
emergencies administration, which closely cooperates with territorial
agencies of the Russian meteorological service, Rosatom state-run nuclear
corporation, consumer rights protection authority, geophysical service of
the Russian Academy of Sciences, other agencies concerned, and with Japan'
s consulate general in Khabarovsk.
