Sakhalin cargo ship resumes its mission after repairs
VLADIVOSTOK, May 3 (Itar-Tass) -- The crew of the Mikhail Lukonin dry
cargo ship of the Sakhalin shipping company, which got in distress in the
Sea of Japan (the East Sea) overnight to Monday, have managed to repair
the ship, the Vladivostok sea rescue coordination center reported on
Tuesday. The ship is currently en route to a South Korean port.
According to earlier reports, Mikhail Lukonin's main engine failed
amid a storm with waves of 2-2.5 meter high and high winds of 13-15 meters
per second. After the Mikhail Lukonin sent the SOS signals, the
Vladivostok sea rescue coordination center dispatched the Pioneer of
Kholmsk big ship of the Sakhalin shipping company for help to the
freighter. The transport vessel towed the Mikhail Lukonin to the Dzhigit
Bay in northern Primorsky Territory, where the Mikhail Lukonin's crew
re-start the engine.
The call-up center of the Sakhalin shipping company reported that the
Mikhail Lukonin dry cargo ship is a river-sea-going vessels. It is 120
meters long and has the load capacity of about 5,000 tons. The freighter
crew is made up of 19 sailors. The ship is loaded with scrap metal.
