Thailand's market share in Cambodia has been declining: KRC

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - The KASIKORN Research Centre (KRC) reported on Monday that Thailand's market share and investment projects in neighbouring Cambodia have been declining since border rows first erupted in 2008, warning Thai business operators to keep updated on the border situation and to eye alternative markets for business expansion.

KRC said that the declining market share and investment in Cambodia appears to have been caused by the Thai entrepreneurs' reduced confidence in the neighbouring market in the wake of the border disputes and growing competition among regional exporters and investors, particularly Vietnam.

According to the leading private think tank, Thailand's market share in Cambodia maintained at its peak of 34.9 per cent in 2008 but fell to 29.9 per cent in 2009; while Vietnam's market share expanded from 19.5 per cent in 2008 to 23.7 per cent in 2009 and appeared have expanded since then--shown by growing Vietnamese exports to Cambodia by 35.3 per cent in 2010 and by 44.3 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, compared with a 31.1 per cent growth of Thai exports to the Cambodian market in the first three months of this year, as shipments of Thai products to Cambodia began to drop in March.

The Bangkok-based research firm acknowledged that Thailand's investment in Cambodia has even plunged, from 30.7 million US dollars in 2008 to only one million US dollars last year.

KRC said, however, that bilateral trade between Thailand and Cambodia has been rising, from 1.40 billion US dollars in 2007 to 2.56 billion US dollars last year, with the Thai side to gain trade surplus, and border trade accounting for at least 70 per cent of the two-way trade.

According to KRC figures, Thai-Cambodian border trade reached 55.41 billion baht last year, a 22.1 per cent year-on-year surge, and further expanded by 14.3 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year to stand at 16.12 billion baht. (TNA)
