Thailand closes evacuee camps near Cambodia border

SURIN, May 2 (TNA) - Temporary evacuee camps in Thailand’s northeast Surin province have been ordered closed as tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border calm.

Surin Governor Serm Chainarong told reporters after meeting with local administrative and security authorities on Monday that he decided to allow evacuees to return home and closed 35 temporary shelters after no more heavy weapons or artillery shells have been fired at the Thai side in the past four days.

Serm noted that he, the 2nd Army Area Commander, and security authorities also believed the only ongoing minor clash at Ta Kwai temple should not affect villagers.

Meanwhile, the governor added that police will be preparing safety measures for the local people, and that their evacuation to previous shelters could be done immediately if clashes resume. (TNA)
