Thai PM orders military alert along Thai-Cambodian border despite truce

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has ordered soldiers to stay alert along the Thai-Cambodian border, saying Cambodian troops are implementing guerrilla warfare to provoke hatred and violence, despite a truce.

Abhisit acknowledged on Monday people living at border villages in Thailand’s northeast Surin province were returning home, after the situation there was expected to improve. He said however, soldiers at the border have been put on alert as Cambodian troops are apparently implementing guerrilla warfare. Although situations have been under control and have not affected villagers for a few days, there are attempts to provoke hatred and more violence.

Regarding the Thai Foreign Ministry’s plan to seek cabinet approval for hiring a legal advisory team to assist Thailand in defending Cambodia’s complaint with the International Court of Justice, Abhisit said that concerned authorities were preparing mechanisms to cope with Cambodian movements. He insisted details of the plan will be discussed on Tuesday and the government will do its best to handle the matter.

Asked if it was still necessary to hold talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Thai premier said that he will wait and see developments as there was still many days before the ASEAN Summit, which begin on May 7, and that their foreign ministers would meet ahead anyway. (TNA)
