Thai border schools to assess situation before re-opening

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Thai Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat said on Monday he has ordered a regional education office at Thailand’s northeast border with Cambodian to assess whether nearby schools can re-open for the new semester, which starts on May 16 across the country.

Chinnaworn noted the coordination with local authorities would help determine whether schools along volatile areas on the Thai side should resume classes on May 16, deemed as a safety precaution for students and school staff.

For now, the Thai education minister said, he has also instructed agencies concerned to look into the damage at the schools along the Thai-Cambodian border, where gunfire between neighbouring troops had continued for more than a week. An official budget from the Office of the Basic Education Commission would soon be allocation for repair work there, he added.

Meanwhile, Chinnaphat Phumrat, Secretary General of the Office of the Basic Education Commission, said that, initially, his office had a policy of having all primary schools across the country reopened simultaneously on May 16--provided that safety of students, teachers and other staff are ensured.

Chinnaphat revealed that the education minister and his office's executives are, therefore, scheduled to inspect schools in the affected areas on May 7 before a final decision is made.

According to the senior education official, some 28 schools in the inner areas of provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border, namely Surin and Buri Ram, have been turned into temporary shelters for affected people after the new spate of crossfire between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted on April 22.
