Thai Court approves extended detention of red-shirt leader charged with lese-majeste

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Bangkok's Criminal Court on Monday approved a 12-day extended detention of a red-shirt leader, Somyos Pruksakasemsuk, who was charged with lese-majeste.

Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) earlier sought the Criminal Court's endorsement of its request for the extended detention of the red-shirt leader, from May 2-13, pending a conclusion of its investigation on the case.

The DSI also opposed bail for a temporary release of the red-shirt leader, reasoning that the leader of the National United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) was arrested in Sa Kaeo Province when he was fleeing to neighboring Cambodia and had failed to report to DSI authorities three times after official summons were issued.

Somyos, who was also a leader of the June 24 democratic group and the owner and editor of the "Voice of Thaksin" Magazine, was accused to have published articles detrimental to the most revered royal Thai monarchy and national security, which violated the Criminal Act, as petitioned last year by the Thai government's Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES).
