DPM: Tension along Thai-Cambodian border should ease after 18th ASEAN Summit

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Monday that tension along the Thai-Cambodian border should ease following the forthcoming ASEAN summit and related meetings, to be held in Jakarta from May 7-8.

Suthep acknowledged that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Cambodian counterpart are scheduled to hold talks on border issues on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Summit in the Indonesian capital.

The Thai deputy premier, who oversees national security, said that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remained unclear, following unconfirmed reports that Cambodian troops appeared to be nervous and to be withdrawing from the area, noting that the Thai military is the party considered most appropriate to provide details on the updated situation to the public.

According to Deputy Premier Suthep, the Thai military has been well-prepared with full capacity to cope with whatever developments along the border and to uphold national sovereignty. (TNA)
