UN evacuates employees from Tripoli
THE UNITED NATIONS, May 2 (Itar-Tass) -- The United Nations
Organization has evacuated its employees from Tripoli. Some 12 UN
international officials left Tripoli for an indefinite time and are
staying in Tunisia, the UN press service reported on Sunday. The
international personnel left the Libyan capital over the disorders in some
parts of the city, the press service said.
Meanwhile, the UN personnel keeps staying in the country, including
Benghazi, the press service reported. The humanitarian operations continue
in Libya, the press service said.
In the middle of April UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos
and UN Special Envoy to Libya Abdelilah Al-Khatib met with the Libyan
leadership to reach an agreement on a UN humanitarian mission in Tripoli.
Then the Libyan authorities guaranteed to the UN employees a free way to
Tripoli across the Tunisian border and the security for humanitarian
workers in all districts, which the authorities are controlling.
However, after the killing of three grandsons and a son of Libyan
leader Muammar Gaddafi in the NATO bombings in Tripoli some armed people
attacked the embassies of several Western countries and the UN mission
office.
