Thai PM inspects progress on construction of new electric train lines

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday inspected progress of the construction of Bangkok's extended electric train projects amid a protest rally of anti-government red-shirt people.

Abhisit inspected a construction site at the Khlong Bang Phai electric train depot on Kanchanaphisek Road, where he was briefed on the progress of the construction of the extended purple and red electric train routes by Thai Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, Permanent Secretary for Transport Supoj Saplom and Director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Soythip Traisuth.

A group of red shirt protesters was waiting for the Thai premier at the entrance of the project site. They raised signs criticising Abhisit for failing to keep promises and shouted for his ouster and urged for a House dissolution.

The Thai prime minister then took a bus of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority to another construction site to inspect a planned interchange of the purple line and the red line electrict railway projects, from Bang Sue to Taling Chan, where another group of red shirt protesters also waited for him for a similar rally.

However, there was no untoward incident during the Thai premier's visit to the construction sites of the extended electric train lines with heavy security measures provided by officers. (TNA)
