Labour representatives march to express opposition to capitalism

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Representatives of Thailand's State Enterprise Workers’ Relations Confederation and networks of informal labour marched from the Parliament building in Bangkok on the occasion of the National Labour Day, announcing their celebration to the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej this year.

The local workers said their procession was also aimed to recall the history on May 1, 1890, when labourers in Chicago, the United States, successfully demanded the reduction of work hours, insisting that the National Labour Day on May 1 should not only a holiday, but also the day which marks labourers’ fight against capitalism.

The labour representatives, who joined the march, urged workers, farmers and the urban poor to fight against capitalism and unfair charges of public services. Importantly, they urged for opposition to the public assembly act that they consider as seriously violating the democratic rights of people.

The workers in the procession also held signs bearing messages calling for the Thai government to ratify Convention Nos. 87 and 98 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) immediately, terminate minimum wage sub-committees at the provincial level and introduce equal wage scales nationwide, as well as demand for opposition to capitalism and an end to Thai labour abuses.(TNA)
