Thai government to raise minimum wages in one month

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva pledged on Sunday that his government will raise minimum wages for local workers across the country within one month.

The Thai premier made the promise during his weekly address “Confidence in Thailand with Premier Abhisit” broadcast nationwide Sunday morning, marking the International Workers' Day, also known as the "May Day", which falls on May 1, saying that his government is considering the new daily minimum wage hike to have it in line with rising costs of living, with its process set to be complete within one month.

Abhisit acknowledged that the Thai Cabinet has initially resolved to raise daily minimum wages for skilled workers in the country by between 200 to 500 baht, and that his administration has also pushed forward a law to provide local workers in the non-formal sector with legal benefits under the official social security system for the first time, effective from this year's May Day.

The Thai Democrat premier announced that his weekly programme, “Confidence in Thailand with Premier Abhisit”, was the last one today, as he plans to announce a House dissolution early this month to pave the way for Thailand's new general election in mid 2011.(TNA)
