Bombers blitz Gold Coast by 139 points

SYDNEY (AAP) - Essendon produced a record first-quarter blitz as they demolished Gold Coast by 139 points in a brutal AFL display at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The Bombers had 13 individual goalkickers including Kyle Reimers who finished with a career-best haul of eight.
Essendon won 31.11 (197) to 8.10 (58) after being 93 points ahead of the competition newcomers at quarter-time.
Angus Monfries and Stewart Crameri each scored four goals for Essendon.
James Hird's Bombers had scored 15.4 (94) by quarter-time, beating the previous record of 13.3 (81) by Hawthorn against North Melbourne in round 16, 1982. North also kicked 13.3 (81) against Richmond in round two, 1990.
After scoring their first-ever AFL win last weekend against Port Adelaide, the Suns crashed to the worst defeat in their short history.
Suns captain Gary Ablett had some harsh words for his players at quarter-time and the skipper showed the way on the field, gathering 11 possessions in the second term as the Suns outscored Essendon five goals to three to reduce the margin to 79 points at half-time.
Ben Howlett, Jobe Watson and Brent Stanton gave Essendon's forwards an armchair ride as the Bombers piled on seven goals to Gold Coast's two in the third quarter to extend their lead to 111 points and Reimers provided more entertainment in the final term with two of Essendon's six goals.
Jared Brennan and David Swallow tried hard for the Suns while former Collingwood ruckman Josh Fraser had little influence on the match, although he appeared to be carrying an injury.
Ablett finished with 30 possessions while Essendon's Watson had a game-high 35.
The Bombers fell short of their highest-ever total of 32.16 (208) against Footscray/Western Bulldogs in 1982.
Crameri had a shot after the siren that would have given Essendon a 200-point tally for only the second time in their history.
It missed however, much to the disappointment of the roaring crowd of 33,710.
Veteran full-back Dustin Fletcher withdrew from Essendon's selected side with a knee problem and his replacement Andrew Welsh broke down with calf tightness in the warm-up, with Jake Melksham coming into the side only moments before the bounce.
