Thai PM visits deep South

NARATHIWAT, April 30 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is visiting the country's deep South on Saturday to attend a meeting of a strategic committee for the development of the troubled far South held at the provincial hall of Narathiwat Province.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Acting Government Spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn and National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potphosree, Abhisit was also scheduled to preside a ceremony to open a new local highway in the afternoon before returning to Bangkok.
Violence in Thailand's insurgency-prone southern border region has continued since early 2004, causing more than 4,000 fatalities so far, as the Thai government is implementing development projects to improve living conditions and quality of life of local people--as a way to end insurgent attacks in the region.
