Coach Tim Sheens to stick with NRL Tigers
SYDENY (AAP) - Wests Tigers have confirmed coach Tim Sheens will stay with the NRL club, knocking back a huge offer from Penrith.
Sheens has decided to stay with the Tigers, reportedly for a further three years, rejecting an offer from the Panthers rumoured to be worth $2 million.
"Wests Tigers is very pleased to announce respected head coach Tim Sheens will remain with the club after turning down an offer from Penrith," a statement on the Tigers' website read.
"And in a major coup, Sheens has accepted a new three-year deal to remain Wests Tigers head coach until the end of 2014."
Sheens' decision will come as a massive relief to the Tigers, whose board had ratified a new contract for the coach before the Panthers weighed in with a four-year deal.
Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys and captain Robbie Farah had expressed their desire for the four-time premiership winner to reach a decision quickly.
The Tigers will attempt to stem a two-game losing streak in Canberra on Sunday, while Sheens will announce his Kangaroos squad for next week's Test against New Zealand on the same afternoon.
The 60-year-old began his coaching career at Penrith and took the club to the finals for the first time in 1985.
The Panthers announced last week that current boss Matt Elliott will not continue once his contract expires at season's end.
Former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown, NSW mentor Ricky Stuart and Panthers assistant Steve Georgallis are reportedly on the club's list.
