VIENTIANE, April 29 (TNA) - Thai and Lao students have constructed, for the first time, a multi-purpose building under their student exchange project to boost bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries' youths, paving the way for the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015.

Visiting Thai Deputy Education Minister Chaiyos Jiramethakorn attended a ceremony on Friday to conclude the student exchange project and open the multi-purpose building that 60 Thai and Lao students constructed during their exchange camp at the Demonstration Secondary School under the Faculty of Education of the National University of Laos.

Referring to the project implemented by Thailand's Ministry of Education and the Office of the Higher Education Commission and Laos' Higher Education Department to boost bilateral relations, Chaiyos acknowledged that the project has promoted the value of international cooperation and cultural exchange in the lead-up to the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015. The Thai deputy education minister said he also believes that the project can lead to a success of further cooperation between the two neighbouring country in the future.

Professor Soukongseng Xayaleuth, Rector of the National University of Laos, said at the ceremony that it was the first Thai-Lao cooperation to build the school building and he wished both countries to prolong their educational cooperation.

Meanwhile, Sumet Yamnoon, Secretary-General of Thailand's Higher Education Commission, revealed that Thailand and neighboring countries have exchanged students in the lead-up to the formation of the ASEAN Community over the next five years, and that Thailand has sent some 50 students to study at universities in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam each for a semester this year--aimed to promote the Thai students and to gain experiences in neighboring countries before their graduation and to improve Thai educational services up to international standards.
