Manado, North Sulawesi, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's North Sulawesi province at 6:53 on Wednesday morning, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) spokesman Mujianto said.

According to him, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 0.98 degrees northern latitude and 126.12 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 20 kilometers under the sea level.

Mujianto said the quake occurred 115 kilometers southeast of Bitung but its tremor could also be felt by the people in Manado and Minahasa.

So far there was no immediate report of casualty and damage following the earthquake but it caused the people in Manado to scramble out of their houses for fear of an aftershock.

Earlier at 7:48 on Tuesday morning, a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was also reported to have rocked Bengkulu.

Local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said the epicenter of the quake was located between 4.75 degrees southern latitude and 101.10 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 35 kilometers and 167 kilometers northwest of Bengkulu city.

On September 12, 2007, Bengkulu was also jolted by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, killing 15 people and leaving more than 40 others wounded.

Since then, up to 40 aftershocks measuring 4.5 to 6.9 on the Richter scale were reported by BMG with tremors felt in some areas.

The earthquake also destroyed 27,834 houses and 19,506 houses in Bengkulu and West Sumatra respectively.

About 28 per cent (7,905 houses) of the 27,834 houses in Bengkulu were severely damaged or totally collapsed.
