Thai businesses in Cambodia not affected by border rows

BANGKOK, April 29 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai said on Friday the Thai commercial attaché in Phnom Penh had reported that most Thai business persons in Cambodia had not been affected by a new spate of Thai-Cambodian border clashes over the past week.

Pornthiva acknowledged that the Thai businesses have continued as usual, as most of them happen along the common border in Thailand's northeastern Sa Kaeo and eastern Trat Provinces. However, the Thai commerce minister said that she has ordered the commercial attaché to monitor the situation closely and to provide assistance if there is any impact on the Thai border businesses.

The minister also told local commercial and internal trade authorities in Thailand's northeastern Surin and Si Sa Ket Provinces and adjacent areas to prevent product hoards and price hikes, warning that wrongdoers are liable up to seven years in jail and/or a fine of up to 140,000 baht each.

According to the Thai commerce minister, the Thai-Cambodian border rows should not affect the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015, noting that Thailand has a free trade agreement (FTA) fund to help affected parties in local agricultural, industrial and service sectors, and that her ministry will seek more budgets for the fund, from some 70 million baht this year.

Since its establishment in 2007, the fund has offered 215 million baht to 27 assistance projects. The Thai minister said that local business operators who are affected by 10 FTAs Thailand have signed with other countries can seek assistance from the FTA fund. (TNA)
