Thailand hails ASEAN chair

BANGKOK, April 29 (TNA) - The Thai government has hailed the role of Indonesia as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in helping solve border rows between Thailand and Cambodia.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa in Jakarta on Thursday, saying that Thailand is one of ASEAN`s founders; so Bangkok wishes to see ASEAN`s constructive role in settling the border rows with Cambodia.

In the meantime, Minister Marty Natalegawa dismissed press reports that Thailand did not want the involvement of a third party in a resolution of bilateral problems with Cambodia, noting that ASEAN is a big family to which Thailand also belongs; so it is no longer considered as a third party in this process.

Marty also said, following his talks with Kasit, he believed that Thailand or Cambodia wish to have the border disputes settled peacefully, citing that both countries have shown intention to settle their border rows without violence, but it has not materialized in a concrete action. (TNA)
