UNBIASED INFORMATION NEEDED IN GLOBALISING WORLD, SAYS AZERTAC CHIEF
BAKU (Azerbaijan), Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Unbiased information is needed by people most when they are facing threats like terrorism, separatism, religious extremism and transnational crimes, says Aslan Aslanov, Director-General of the Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency (AzerTAc).
Speaking at the opening of the two-day, 30th executive board meeting of OANA (Organisation of Asia Pacific News Agencies) here Tuesday, he said that in a contemporary world of globalisation and integration, access to such information for all was a necessity.
However, he said even when inter-civilisation dialogues between the East and West had become topical as never before, there were still some media organisations that were continuing to spread biased and distorted information, sometimes to the extent of even insulting religion or national values.
"And this is nothing but an incitement to hatred and extremism," added
Aslan.
He hoped that the holding of the OANA executive board meeting in
Azerbaijan, whose theme is "Information for all in the Globalising World", would elicit suggestions and recommendations on how to ensure the speedy dissemination of unbiased and objective news around the world.
OANA currently has a membership of 41 news agencies from 33 countries,
including Bernama from Malaysia, Antara from Indonesia, Xinhua from China, Kyodo from Japan, Yonhap from South Korea, IRNA from Iran and Anadolu from Turkey.
Bernama is represented at the meeting by its acting General Manager
Visvakumar Sangiah and Editor-in-Chief Yong Soo Heong.
Delegates to the meeting also had a meeting with the President of
Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, at the president's office.
Antara's CEO Dr Ahmad Muchlis Yusuf, who is currently the President of
OANA, said OANA's priority under Antara's leadership this year after the Indonesian national news agency had taken over from Bernama last year would be to build closer relationships in a programme known as internal consolidation.
He said the OANA website, http://oananews.org, would be made friendlier to users while the OANA Secretariat would strive to have improved financial administration and better service to members.
In 2009, he said OANA would be more focused on external relations and
getting business and commercial cooperation. - BERNAMA
