PM CALLS FOR CONSOLIDATION OF MUSLIM COMMUNITY TO AVERT QUARRELS
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
Tuesday called on "ulama" (scholars) and "umara" (administrators) to work together to consolidate the Muslim community to avert quarrels among the faithful.
He said Muslims should appreciate and acquire deep knowledge of the
religion because good Muslims would not deviate and indulge in matters abhorred by the religion, such as violence and riots.
"I wish to see the individual Muslim not only as a professional with a
career and knowledgeable in a diversity of fields.
"I wish to see him or her as someone who has deep understanding of
religious knowledge," he said at a dialogue between the prime minister and ulama and umara organised by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia at the Federal Territory Mosque, here.
"God does not like us to do all these (violence and rioting) things. We have to discharge our duties with full responsibility. As such, we will become good, peace-loving and successful human beings and not be foes to anybody," he said.
Abdullah said it could not be denied that there were various views and
opinions on Islam which could confuse the followers and these should be explained so that there would be no confusion.
That was why, he said, he advocated Islam Hadhari because its 10 principles were not contrary to those of any other religion.
Abdullah said education was a primary element which enabled an individual to understand Islamic teachings.
"If we receive the right education and good advice, we will be able to
reduce the foes confronting us. If we have this resilience, our desire to reduce the foes will be achieved," he said.
The prime minister said the government, through its National Mission,
emphasised on the need for the community to harbour the determination to elevate one's personal values.
He said he hoped that in this way, there would emerge unity between the professionals and the ulama, leading to greater understanding and an improved status for Muslims.
