Syria's opposition plans new day of wrath

BEIRUT, April 29 (Itar-Tass) -- Syrian opposition plans a new Day of
Wrath on Friday as banned Sunnite Muslim Brotherhood called on the people
to stage mass protests against the ruling regime.
Earlier the Brotherhood, which masterminded an anti-government revolt
in early 1980s, said it was not involved in organizing protests in various
parts of the country. However now it changed the position.
"We cannot keep silent when whole cities are surrounded by tanks. The
Syrians should in one voice resolutely state their right for free and
decent life," the Brotherhood said in a statement.
Regional observers believe the change in the position of the main
opposition force is the most serious challenge to authorities in weeks of
anti-government protests.
The so-called Movement of Revolutionary Youth also called on
protesters "to crowd all streets and squares in Syrian cities and demand
the ouster of the tyrant."
In the meantime, the Syrian interior ministry recalled that a new law
on demonstrations envisages preliminary applications for mass events. It
called on the people to stay at home until stability is fully restored and
not to adhere to provocative calls.
Law enforcement sources said the "anti-terrorist operation" in Deraa
was yielding success and the official SANA news agency said "the people
are grateful to the army for help."
The news agency said 78 army soldiers and police were killed in the
country during the unrest and estimated the civilian death toll at close
to 70 people.
However opposition activists say over 130 people were killed in Deraa
only this week and estimated the overall nationwide death toll in
March-April at 617. Over 1.7 thousand people were reportedly arrested.
Al Jazeera TV channel reported Syrian families are fleeing to
neighboring Lebanon and Jordan from areas where the upheavals are being
suppressed. Thus, it said 1.7 thousand women fled from Syria's Tel-Kalah
to northern Lebanon.
Mass demonstrations were held by residents of Zabadani, 50 kilometers
west of Damascus on Thursday. Shots were heard in the area and arrests
reportedly followed.
In Homs, 165 kilometers north of the capital city, crowds of people
demanded to pull out tanks from Deraa where the humanitarian situation is
deteriorating every day.
