Shake-up at News Ltd, with new Tele editor
SYDNEY (AAP) - Garry Linnell has stepped down as editor of Sydney's highest-circulating newspaper, The Daily Telegraph.
He will be replaced by Paul Whittaker, who has been the editor of The Australian since February 2007.
"Garry Linnell has decided to leave the company to pursue other interests," News Limited said in a statement on Thursday.
Three of the company's biggest mastheads will undergo changes, with Clive Mathieson to be promoted from deputy editor to editor of The Australian.
Alan Oakley will take on a new role as the editorial strategy director of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.
News Limited chairman and chief executive John Hartigan said the changes, effective immediately, were about developing the next generation of editorial content.
"These appointments signal further significant changes in the way we produce journalism for a bigger audience, on more platforms," he said in a statement.
"The way we organise and run our newsrooms, how we connect with readers and the tone and content of what we create are all changing and these appointments will give us the impetus we need to make that happen."
