FM: Thailand uses diplomatic approaches to cope with Cambodia

BANGKOK, April 28 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Thursday that Thailand is using diplomatic approaches to respond to Cambodia, explain pending border rows with the neighbouring country to the international community and ask the world community to check whether Cambodia has spent international donations on its national development.

Speaking to reporters before flying to Jakarta on Thursday morning to attend the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council meeting in the Indonesian capital, Kasit insisted that Thailand has always called for negotiations to end unsettled border problems with Cambodia and Thailand did not first attacked the neighbouring country but has been defending national sovereignty.

The Thai foreign minister said that Bangkok will continue to respond to Cambodia through diplomatic channels, calling on Cambodia to end the new spate of border crossfire, which began last Friday, as it is losing its own resources to the warfare. According to the Thai foreign minister, Cambodia has reportedly located rockets in communities, which should be deplored as innocent people appeared to have been used as human shields and this violates human rights and no other countries do it.

Kasit insisted that Thailand wants to see the well-being of Cambodian people and sound relations with all neighboring countries, noting that Thailand has assisted Cambodia in several projects and Thai hospitals in border areas have treated poor Cambodian people free of charge. The Thai foreign minister said whether the new round of border clashes will be prolonged does not depend on Thailand but on Cambodia.

Kasit is scheduled to meet his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa later the same day--during which the ongoing border tension between Thailand and Cambodia and a progress of draft details about Indonesian observers’ arrival to inspect areas along the Thai-Cambodian border are expected to be discussed. Indonesia is the current chair of ASEAN, in which both Thailand and Cambodia are members. (TNA)
