RI HOPES THAI GOVT TO HOLD DIALOGS WITH PROTESTERS

Jakarta, Sept 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia hopes that in the face of the growing movement of dissent in Thailand, the Thai government will hold dialogs with the protesters, presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said here on Tuesday.

Djalal said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was paying close attention to developments taking place of late in Thailand.

"Thailand is one of our closest neighbors and we want the Thai government to be able to continue maintaining political stability in the country," he said.

He said although Indonesia fully subscribed to the view that the happenings in Thailand were purely that country's internal affair, Indonesia hoped that the Thai government would hold dialogs in order to maintain political stability.

Anti-government protesters have for the past seven days been exerting pressure on Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to resign from his post.

Demonstrators have occupied several government buildings and offices and are planning to cut off power supplies to several other government offices.

The protests are led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and have on the support of various workers unions. The workers unions launched strikes to demand Samak's resignation.
