Zebari, US Ambassador discuss bilateral relations in light of forces' withdrawal

Baghdad (NINA) – Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, discussed with US Ambassador to Iraq, James Jeffrey, the relations between Iraq and the United States in light of American forces' withdrawal from Iraq.

A statement issued on Wednesday, Apr. 27, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "Foreign Minister met with US Ambassador discussing bilateral relations in light of American forces' withdrawal by year end and the possibility of expanding them within the frames of the Strategic Frame Agreement concluded between both countries in serving their mutual interests."

It added, "Discussion covered also the region's current developments and Arab people calls for reform and change."

They also reviewed Iraqi government's efforts to safeguard Iraqi funds in the Development Fund of Iraq, stressing the importance of Iraqi government concluding a report to the Security Council on preparations for closing the Fund.

Both sides discussed Foreign Ministry's relations with the US Embassy and consulates in Iraq after withdrawal of American force, where the Minister asserted the government's keenness to provide all required help and facilities to guarantee smooth perform of their work.




Talabani asserts Iraq's positive stands toward Egypt



Baghdad (NINA) – President Jalal Talabani asserted Iraq's continued positive stands toward Egypt.

A statement issued on Wednesday, Apr. 27, by the President's Office said, "Talabani met on Wednesday evening with Egypt's Ambassador to Iraq, Shareef Shaheen, who delivered a message from the Chairman of Egypt's Supreme Military Council, General Husseing Tantawi.

The statement quoted Talabani saying in the meeting, "Iraq's stance in supporting Egypt will continue; there is a strong intention by the government and all Iraqi sides to consolidate bilateral relations and activate the Strategic Agreement concluded between both countries as well as activating the works of joint committees formed in accordance with the Agreement."

For his part, Ambassador Shaheen asserted that his country desires for the strategic cooperation with Iraq to continue, especially at this time, hoping that Talabani leads the move.

As for the up coming Arab Summit, the Egyptian Ambassador asserted that his country is keen to have the Summit be held in Baghdad.
