STATE SECRETARY IN WASHINGTON
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs D.Tsogtbaatar has met with officials of the U.S Department of State and experts of NGOs and research institutes to share views on transferring the responsibility of the Community of Democracies (CD) to Mongolia from 2011 and on activities to be implemented under a leadership of Mongolia.
On Tuesday, the State Secretary held meetings with Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, the Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Mr. Carl Gershman, a head of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED); and Mr. Morton Halperin, a Senior Advisor for the Open Society Institute. Then Tsogtbaatar attended a round table meeting organized with a participation of specialists and experts of U.S institutes on the CD, and detailed about guidelines and goals of the leadership of Mongolia within the office term.
He has said Mongolia intends to lead the CD as fruitful as possible and highlighted an importance of joint efforts to raise a reputation of the community. He has spoken about intentions of Mongolia to form the democracy's education and civil society institutions, to cooperate with countries in strengthening the regional cooperation and boosting the democracy considering positions of the sides.
The sides have appreciated the proposals of Mongolia on collaborating in approving a UN General Assembly's resolution on democracy's education, realizing an activity plan of the CD's working group to be co-established between Mongolia and Poland, supporting open society institutions. They have agreed to cooperate in these matters.
On Wednesday, D.Tsogtbaatar will give a report at an opening of an annual meeting of the North America-Mongolia business council, and then will meet with Mr. James Steinberg, a Deputy Secretary of State, and Mr. Kurt M. Campbell, an Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
The State Secretary's visit is continuing.
