TORTURED INDONESIAN DOMESTIC HELPER PREFERS COMPENSATION

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 2 (ANTARA) - An Indonesian domestic helper from Cilacap, Central Java, who had been tortured by her employer preferred to be given a compensation rather than bring the case to a court of law in Malaysia.

"I have already withdrawn my report to Malaysian police and prefer a compensation from my employer for mistreatment," said Kamira (25) at the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Kamira was with her male employer and an official of the Malaysian Agency and President of the Malaysian Association of Foreign Domestic Helpers Agencies Zulkepley Dahalan.

At the beginning, they would settle the case at the Seremban police station of Negeri Sembilan, but at the request of the Indonesian embassy the Kamira's torture case was eventually settled at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier, Malaysian mass media carried Kamira's case in their news reports which ended with Kamira's hospitalization for injuries she had sustained from torture by her Malaysian Chinese employer.

Kamira had burns in her mouth. She was ordered to swallow the the hot liquid drop of a burning candle, hot water in addition often struck with a cane, and eventually ended up at a hospital.
Having worked at her employer's house for 21 months, Kamira said she never received her wages from her employers.
Kamira checked out from the hospital on Monday (Sept 1) after the agency arranged things for her. She was asked to withdraw her report to Malaysian police as a guaranty to release her female employer from police detention.

Kamira then withdrew her report and was ready to receive a compensation from her employer and the payment of 21 months of her wages in addition to an insurance payment of about Rp40 million in Jakarta.

"I missed by family in my home village," she said. Since working in Malaysia, she had no chance to contact her husband and children in Cilacap.

Karima worked in Malaysia through a labor placement agency Mitra Solusi Integritas in Central Java and Malaysian agency Permai Unik Sdn Bhd.
