Thai FM convenes US ambassador to discuss Thai-Cambodian border clashes

BANGKOK, April 27 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya on Wednesday convened the US Ambassador to Thailand, Kristie Kenney, to explain Thai-Cambodian clashes and asked the United States to convince neighbouring Cambodia to return to negotiations.

Ajaree Sriratanaban, Director of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs' News Division, told reporters after the meeting between the Thai foreign minister and the US top envoy that Kasit clarified Thailand did not open fire and has, instead, helped Cambodia, especially through trade cooperation and promotion.

Ajaree said Kasit also acknowledged that the latest meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), held in Indonesia recently, went on smoothly, and that there was also progress in Indonesia's plan to send its observers to a disputed area along the Thai-Cambodian border.

According to the senior official, the Thai foreign minister denied that Thailand intended to delay any negotiation process with Cambodia and asked the United States to convince Cambodia to come to a negotiation table with Thailand. The Thai foreign minister expressed his support for US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s call on both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to hold talks through existing bilateral mechanisms.

Ajaree said the US ambassador has acknowledged the Thai foreign minister’s message and promised to forward it to the US Department of State. Meanwhile, the US has also convened the Thai ambassador to Washington D.C. to discuss the same issue.

The Thai foreign minister is also scheduled to discuss the matter with Indonesian, New Zealand, and Australian ambassadors and the Canadian charge d’affaires to Thailand in Bangkok Wednesday evening. (TNA)
