Private sector warns prolonged Thai-Cambodian border rows to have long-term impacts on trade

BANGKOK, April 27 (TNA) - The Thai private sector has warned that prolonged border rows between Thailand and Cambodia can have long-term negative impacts on trade in Southeast Asia.
Thanawat Polvichai, Director of University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's Economic and Business Forecasting Centre, said on Wednesday if the new spate of Thai-Cambodian border clashes, which erupted last Friday, continued longer than 2-3 months, they could cut the Thai economic growth by 0.1 per cent. Besides, Thanawat cautioned although the value of trade between both countries amounts for only 40-50 billion baht annually, the prolonged clashes might affect overall trade in Southeast Asia.
Aat Pisanwanich, Director of the university's Centre for International Trade Studies, urged concerned parties to separate political issues from trade, suggesting that Thailand should not lose the Cambodian market to China and Vietnam in the future. (TNA)
