Thailand pulls out park authorities at border with Cambodia

BANGKOK, April 27 (TNA) - Officials of Thailand's national parks in areas bordering Cambodia have been ordered to withdraw, as crossfire between Thai and Cambodian troops entered its sixth day on Wednesday.

Thai Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti said the order he issued today covers nine Thai national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the country's volatile northeastern areas, where public entry is now barred under the strict supervision of local troops.

Suwit acknowledged that Thai authorities have also planned to ask the United Nations Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to play a mediator's role in settling Thai-Cambodian rows on disputed border areas, particularly those designated as world heritage zones.

On a personal note, the Thai minister said the next world heritage meeting chaired by the UNESCO Director-General, scheduled for May 25, should be postponed pending the demarcation.

Meanwhile, the Thai-Cambodian border clashes re-erupted early Wednesday morning in a disputed area near Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom Temples adjacent to Thailand's northeastern Surin Province, marking the sixth straight day of fighting between Thai and Cambodian soldiers, which have reportedly left more than a dozen dead and more than 20 others injured; while thousands of affected people of both sides evacuated to safe places.
