Thai PM visits injured soldiers and villagers in Surin

SURIN, April 27 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva put all other commitments on hold on Wednesday to visit injured soldiers and villagers in Thailand's northeastern Surin Province--following a new spate of border clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops.
Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit reported that the new round of Thai-Cambodian border clashes, which erupted last Friday, have caused the closure of as many as nine Thai hospitals and his ministry has deployed five more teams of doctors in Surin, where most of the clashes took place. The Thai health minister said that his ministry has also deployed 23 mobile units of doctors to treat people in Surin and eight more in nearby Buri Ram Province focusing on mental health services as the affected people appeared to be seriously concerned over their safety. According to the Thai health minister, 47 injured people have been admitted to local hospitals following the latest outbreak of border violence.
During the field trip, the Thai premier said that his government has not pulled out of planned ceasefire talks with Cambodia and will make a new appointment with Phnom Penh on the ceasefire negotiations after Thai Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan returns from his ongoing four-day visit to China, scheduled for April 27-30.
Meanwhile, international media reports that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called for a truce with Thailand on Wednesday as the new spate of border clashes have left some 14 people dead, more than 20 others injured and thousands of affected villagers evacuated to temporary shelters. (TNA)
