Thai-Cambodian military clashes have not affected border trade: FTI

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) concluded on Tuesday that the new spate of crossfire between Thai and Cambodian troops have not seriously affected border trade between the two neighbouring countries.
FTI Chairman Payungsak Chartsuthiphol warned, however, that over 100 Thai businesses in Cambodia, mainly hotels and industrial plants, would definitely be affected if the ongoing crossfire escalated.
According to the FTI figures, border trade between Thailand and Cambodia exceeded 777 billion baht last year and was earlier expected to further expand by about 23.7 per cent this year, worth some 850 billion baht.
Meanwhile, Thanit Sorat, FTI deputy chairman, said that the Thai private sector would propose four measures to the Thai government to ease impacts from the ongoing border rows with Cambodia. They include no closure of additional border passes, no power blackouts and no suspension of fuel exports to the Cambodian side; no verbal and any other form of provocation to stir further violence; no more verbal arguments regarding unsettled border areas but joint development of the areas for mutual benefits, and a clear separation between political and economic policies and measures implemented by the Thai government, to prevent or ease impacts of the ongoing political tension along the Thai-Cambodian border.
