Thailand approves negotiation framework for Thai-Burmese border demarcation

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - The Thai parliament on Tuesday, chaired by House Speaker Chai Chidchob, approved with 382 votes a negotiation framework for the demarcation of the Thai-Burmese border by the Thai-Burmese Joint Boundary Committee.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said the 2,400-kilometer-long border between Thailand and Burma had been demarcated, but border posts were then too far apart, with some having already disappeared. Previous demarcations were also conducted using outdated maps, he said, noting a complete verification was therefore necessary before the countries could ink a new borderline agreement, especially in sections that will be opened for trade.

Kasit noted however, there were positive signs for the border negotiation, considering the election in Burma now over, and a new government sworn in.

The foreign minister also said Thailand would conduct a joint survey and verification of the borderline with Burma, based on international principles, facts and public inquiry, and thereafter seek parliamentary approval on the final demarcation.

Meanwhile, members of the Thai parliament have urged authorities concerned to ensure the fair interest of both countries and avoid unnecessary territorial losses. (TNA)
